Vintage Bagley Lure Collections

Helping others get started collecting Bagleys is the primary purpose of this website. With increased demand for my favorite lure there will come increased value. Having this website available as a tool, hopefully some of the Heddon, Creek Chub, Paw Paw, South Bend and other traditional bait company collectors will begin to have the confidence to start collecting Bagleys. After all, Bagleys are also hand made, hand painted, and for the most part, all wooden balsa baits deserving of the loyal following the older companies have garnered over the years. Already, you can't go a week without one or more Bagleys bringing hundreds of dollars on eBay. I hope to make it a little bit easier for the fledgling Bagley Fanatic to determine which lures are worthy of spending that kind of cash on.

Seeing collections displayed at lure shows and on public sites is often enough to push the "Nervous Nellie's" over the edge to shell out their first 20 bucks towards starting a collection. On this page I will be featuring some of my, and some of my fellow collectors', beautiful collections, in the hopes of attracting "new blood" to our hobby.

Salesman Worm Display

This one-of-a-kind portable salesman's worm display is a folding 6 panel carry-all that is only 3 3/4" X 13" X 17 3/4" when completely closed, while being an impressive 6' 6" when fully open. I purchased it from a gentleman that used to own a tackle store in North Alabama where he acquired the display over 40 years ago. Be sure to click on the pictures until each panel completely fills the page so you can fully enjoy this amazing Bagley find.

Bagley Master Collection

Bagley Master Collection

The idea behind this master collection was to have two of every model in each series that Bagley made. Additionally, I didn't want the same color to occur twice and, if possible, I wanted the color represented to be a tough color for that partiular model. For example, DC9 (Dark Crayfish on Chartreuse) is a very common color, but in a BB4 it is pretty hard to come across. I was able to get pretty close to that objective. I still need a couple of Poor Penny's and one or two other lures, and I only had to use duplicate colors a few times.

2" Small Fry Collection

I'm certain this is the most comprehensive 2" Small Fry collection in the world. Many of these colors were acquired when Bagley cleared out their warehouse of every lure that was laying around and brought them to Springfield, MO to Bass Pro Shop for that company's first World's Fair.

2 Inch Small Fry Collection

3" Small Fry Collection

The Small Fry series were some of the most realistic lures ever made. They were always some of my favorite lures when I was fishing full time.

3 Inch Small Fry Collection

5" Small Fry Collection

I never threw this size Small Fry at all. For one thing, there weren't many 5" Small Frys sold in the South as it is considered a muskie sized lure. The more I think about it now, this would be a great size to drag through fallen trees on the Coosa river system because it is actually small compared to the gizzard shads that are common down here.

Bagley Shiner/Pinfish Collection

This often overlooked Bagley jewel, which was designed to run in 18 inches of water or less, could really catch 'em, given the right circumstances. I'm guessing these lures were most popular in Florida, where there was a lot of "skinny" water, because they were as rare as chicken teeth in my part of the country.

Kill'R B 2 Collection

This Killer B 2 collection is a solid representation of all the colors Bagley had to offer. There are 225 unique colors, with variations and pattern differences bringing the total lures in this collection to 266.

Killer B II Collection

Suspending Kill'R B 2 Collection

The suspending Kill'R B 2's were pretty much "a flash in the pan" for the Bagley Bait Co.. The amount of weight it took to cause a lure to suspend was directly dependent on water temperature and salinity. Once you trimmed the lead weight, called the SAB {Suspending Adjustment Button}, the first time, it was only going to suspend properly in water temperature, and or, salinity, that was the same as when you initially achieved successful neutral bouyancy.

Sinking Bang-O-Lure Collection

The Sinking Bang-O-Lures apparently never really took off as they were only featured in the 1987 Bagley catalog. These special countdown baits were fitted with a rounded diving lip and came in 2" and 4" sizes. They are very difficult to locate. In particular, the 2" Sinkers are known to be "as scarce as hen's teeth".

Hustle Bug/Rat Fink Collection

This combination Hustle Bug and Rat Fink collection is an impressive example of two of the more diverse models The Bagley Bait Co. manufactured through the years. Top Bagley collector, Bill Whitesell, contributed this picture to the site.

Stick-Up Collection

Roger Durham has put together this very nice collection Bagley Stick-Ups in the original 4 colors (BC, BG, BLS, and BS), with and without the bucktail, which appeared in the 1982 and 1983 catalogs. Also included in this group is a super tough M4 (Shad on White) with bucktail.

Fat Cat Collection

This large Fat Cat collection has been put together by long time Bagley collector Phillip Crownover. The Fat Cat was one of the best selling lures Bagley ever sold, particularily in the later years of the company. Because of it's diminutive size, you can get a lot of lures in a very small area, making this a very popular lure to collect and display.

Fat Cat Collection II

Bagley collecting is not just an American pastime as is evidenced by Paul Thompson's impressive Fat Cat collection. Paul hails from the United Kingdom and collects colors in both the shallow, and deep diving lips. He tells me some of these rattle, which I suppose is a feature on some of the newer cats. The Bleeding Hot Tiger is very impressive!

Mama Cat Collection

Tournament fisherman Clint Rabalais decided to retire one of his favorite Bagley lure models, the Mama Cat, and share them with the rest of us. Clint had the benefit of his dad and grandfather contributing their favorite Cats to his impressive collection.

Crayfish on Natural Balsa Collection

This Crayfish on Natural Balsa Collection has been assembled by former Bassmaster touring pro Bob Lane who has always been an avid Bagley collector. This is one of several collections Bob has put together for his lucky grandkids.

Baby Bass Collection

The Little Bass on White, or as it's often called, Baby Bass, has always been one of my favorite colors and patterns. This was also a poplular color with other lure companies including Poe's and Rebel.

Hot Tiger Collection

The Hot Tiger (H69T) is one of the most popular Bagley colors of all time. Once the sun is fully up, visibilty is one of the most important factors in getting a bass to hit your lure. It's pretty obvious why there were so many lures sold in this color.

3" Bang-O-B Collection

The Bang-O-B was a hybrid which combined the slender profile of the Bang-O-Lure series with the diving action of the Balsa B series of lures.

Dub'L 07 Collection

This little topwater bait was probably patterned after Smithwick's Devil's Toothpick, which was a killer in calm water. A quick jerk would cause a spray of water to fan out, imitating a spooked bait fish.
